The video suggests that the reason the public does not hear about cyber related crimes against financial institutions is because such institutions work closely with law enforcement to prevent news from reaching the press with the intention of protecting the financial institutions' reputation. I would argue the reason is equally about preventing mass hysteria because our livelihoods are so dependent on money. If (name your bank) was hacked and the result negatively impacted the financial security of their customers, sure the bank's reputation would be irreversibly jeopardized, but how would the victims immediately react, civilly or criminally (riots, looting, arson, theft)?

Someone in an earlier post asked if the Die Hard 4 movie reference was relevant. I think so because it shows how fearless cyber criminals are when it comes to commiting these types of crimes. Their approach to these acts exemplify high-risk high-reward to the nth degree. Plus I love a good Die-Hard reference. I love me some John McClane!

I think the reason why we, as in the public, do not hear about cyber robberies to often is because of the companies involved, and the sense of security we have with our credit cards. When a person uses their credit card at various retailers and online retailers we assume the retailers are protecting our information. When we hear that our personal information as been stolen from said retailer, we are more likely not to go to that retailer in the future. As the information age continues every business is starting to take information security seriously in order to protect themselves and their customers.

I found the last point the most disturbing. The part where he says we dont hear about these kinds of crimes because the financial institutions and the government investigators basically collude to not publicize it. How does hiding these crimes serve the public who are the customers of these institutions?

This is true that bringing out such types of crimes and the victim institution's name everyday would bring a panic among the citizens. But also makes me wonder how many such crimes would be happening everyday that we are not just aware of. We just hear a few bank robberies here n there.
