Good short video...not sure I agree with the video that these kind of heists are mostly unknown to the public...I think that is probably a mistake that many companies make...they try to cover up the fact that they were compromised instead of letting people know as soon as it happens...

It isn't completely unknown; the public knows this as the "TJ Maxx" hack, even though he hit Dave and Busters, DSW, Barnes and Noble, and a few others. The video makes a great point, in that the public doesn't know about this cyberheists. However, I would argue that it isn't the loss of faith in the banking system that prevents the public from knowing, so much as it is the media deciding that the case isn't sexy enough (or too technical) for public consumption.

I like how they make everything seem so sinister when it really all comes down to human error and carelessness on the retailers part. Now, he's jailed for 20 years but what about these retailers that aren't taking safeguarding personal information serious? Nothing.

I remember reading about this case a few years ago. It was a milestone case not only because it was one of the largest fraud cases but his sentence was also one of the longest delivered for cyber crime--20 years. Plus, he owed restitution that amounted to millions. But considering the amount of money he stole-I think it fits. TJX and their customers lost staggering amounts and unfortunately these high losses are far too common these days. Another element in this story that I thought was interesting was that Gonzalez was working for the Secret Service when he committed these crimes. This was job he got after he war arrested for similar fraud crimes and unfortunately he regressed.

I feel bad for large retail companies like Macy's - who are already having to close stores - concerning information security issues because they are dealing with this problem in two-fold. First, in order secure their customer's money they have to invest in costly information security measures. Second, in order to keep them coming back, they must maintain their (the customers who are supplying their livelihood) confidence in many aspects - customer service and security being a few. So, what must I - as a consumer do - when I wait 30 mins in line to purchase an item only to be assisted by an overworked employee who has only gotten an 10 cent raise in the last 8 years?
