The cyber crimes that are not reported are those that will harm the business or person to an extent to undermine their ability to conduct business. The 1930s Depression and runs on banks told a story of what people did to try to protect themselves and their families. They wanted to withdraw their funds so not to lose it. In the 1980s, the Savings and Loan crisis shed light on how the FDIC insurance was slow to dole our people’s banked funds and the limitation of the insurance itself to protect the Savings and Loan customers. The 2008 Bank crisis this country went through brought about an increase in the FDIC insurance and the ability of the U.S.A.’s financial sector to project a sense of stability and solvency helped to keep the financial institutions from collapsing. The amount of personal data that each of us has accumulated and shared in a lifetime is immeasurable. It can be estimated but the vulnerabilities that can target any given source is virtually unknown. The government’s push toward open data that accounts for my addresses over my lifetime, the school systems that have personal information, the employment records, the financial records and any other data collecting source is immeasurable. I find myself on camera more times during the days than not. My vehicle is scanned every time I drive under a highway gantry or through a tollbooth. Company record management policies is another unknown. I have mail that is still arriving at my parent’s home that has my maiden name. The data is not destroyed and the cost of it to protect it is high. Let’s face it, companies take on risk and risking my financial health is a risk they are willing to take. Companies are not willing to risk their reputation as a culprit to my family’s financial security, so they do not report they have been hacked. We the people must punish companies that do not reasonable protect us by withholding our money. Target lost credit card information, I shop there rarely and when I do, I use cash. I communicate what I think of a company by whether I spend or not spend my money. The more we vote with our money and with our patronage, the more companies will learn to take us seriously enough to protect our personal information from criminals.

This is pathetic that hackers could even steal encrypted data which is saved using sophisticated technology. Its harming in many ways like stealing credit card information, withdrawal of money through debit card, harming financial institution reputation.

I think financial institutions can use latest technology and save data with more encryption to avoid such incidents more frequently.
