Everyday Cybercrime - and what you can do about it
klevanat February 04,2015 While stopping mosquitoes with a laser fence is certainly geek worthy, detractors of Intellectual Ventures do rightly point out that there are probably slightly easier or more practical ways to reduce the mosquito population or combat malaria. Their website does show that they are actually working on improving the ability to diagnose the disease which is apparently difficult.
He brings up a very good point that your car, phone, and probably your toaster are all computers. This is becoming even more prevalent smart homes are no longer a thing of the future. While all this technology is very cool it is also pretty unsettling how easily some of these devices are controlled.

This is an interesting video about different techniques to exploit new and even antique technologies. Around the 7 minute mark, he touched on a valuable point about how the majority of these new network accessible devices such as cars, lighting, and locks inherit the security properties, problems of PCs.
connellytat March 24,2015 This video covered a lot of different things, and I'm not really sure it had a consistent message. It was definitely more of a demonstration, but was certainly entertaining. I agree with the detractor's point in the comment above, that while shooting lasers at mosquitoes is geek worthy, it's not a very practical solution. However, it would probably be necessary to get the mosquitoes that fly over the laser fence.
nbodykat March 24,2015 Nice demonstration of the ways you can exploit current technology so hackers can get information from unsuspecting users. The presentation was rather disjointed. I'm not sure why he went through the ways to exploit technology then end it with a demonstration on using lasers to kill mosquitoes. It really doesn't sync with the rest of the presentation.
marinomsat March 26,2015 I think that the way you can hack into phones, social media, car keys, and locks is very very interesting. Yes it is scarey at what can happen but the fact that someone has come up with some of these criminal acts is smart. I believe that these types of technologies will always be happening as we become more dependent of computers. this goes for all the apps that we use to lock doors, change the temperature of houses, and many others.
