michealb40at September 04,2016 Security is only as good as its weakest link. In most cases, the weakest link is at the register. Some commenters have questioned how this guy has been able to do this for 17 yrs without getting caught. I put "check ID" on my credit card's signature block and, in the 2 years it was on there, I was never once asked for ID. Now, with the decrease in customer service reps even putting their own hands on your card, there is no checking at all.
BBurgessat September 08,2016 Interesting documentary. Its happen to make on many occasions and what I am wondering is A) Where do they get the skimmer from? Black Market? China? B) How do they get them into a scenario to swipe peoples cards? Do they work at some retail store?
I've always heard about gas station credit card skimmers at the pump and I am curious to how those work too. Its irritating how easy it is for lazy people to steal hard working peoples money. I am glad were moving to the EMV (chip and pin) cards. The implementation of EMV in the UK resulted in a 75% decrease in credit card fraud at brick and mortar stores over 8 years (2004 to 2012). However, European fraud has merely switched to new locations.
•elaborate ATM fraud
•markets without chip-and-PIN like the US
This will at least slow the thief's down for a little while. That's why it is a back and forth between the companies implementing the security and the thief's hacking past the security. We have to stay ahead of the thief's in order to cut down and make it not profitable enough to keep skimming for the thief's.
ahammes12at October 06,2016 I have actually used card read/writers exactly like the one the credit cad skimmers are using. However, I've used them to write student ID cards as a job at my University. But it goes without saying how easy some of this equipment can be obtained. The positive with the growing need for security on credit cards is that action is being taken. Now a credit card skimmer might get immediately rejected when asked to insert their credit card into a chip reader. I believe we will see an end to these credit card skimmers hopefully in the near future when chip readers is a requirement of every store. This was a great topic to make a video on and I am thoroughly impressed with the way the skimmer easily obtained credit card information so quickly.
kbacon5at November 14,2016 This credit card thief seemed like he needed help and did not seem very good at his "job", considering he had been doing it for 17 years. It seemed he got distracted quite easily and blamed the interviewer. I thought it was interesting they said that he is stealing money from consumers at the end because from my understanding in most cases it is the credit card companies that take the loss. Also, with the advanced analytics for credit and even debit cards the companies usually catch fraud somewhat quickly from my experience. I know someone who never uses credit, only debit cards and the bank has contacted her about suspected fraud a few times in the past few years and refunded the transactions immediately like a credit card company would do. Maybe her bank is better than most or rules are changing because awhile back it took many years to get the money refunded if someone stole your debit card. But I might be wrong about some of my points, I am mainly bringing up my experience and people's experiences that I know of.
samat November 20,2016 surprising how the credit cards are vulnerable. Was the thief doing this since he was in high school???
His method looks very legit, nobody suspected him at all. Even when the credit card declines the merchant did not think of the legitimacy of the transaction. This guy make very few low transaction and then destroys the card!
Hope one day will be caught.
A couple of time I found some huge number of transaction happened in my credit, but the bank immediately called me and checked if I am the right person making the transaction, and immediately avoid the action, On another case when I was in another country also the bank called me if and asked me if I am the real me person doing the transaction, then I approved it.
Why the credit companies produce a very secure way of the card which may include something like our fingerprint?
