DEF CON 21 - Unexpected Stories From a Hacker Inside the Government
nickat May 02,2016 Really excellent overview of Silk Road and the steps taken to identify Robert Ulbricht. Previously I only had peripheral knowledge of the demise of Dread Pirate Roberts, so this video presented the material in a concise manner, using link analysis which made it easy to follow. The great part about cyber security and digital forensics is that one continually has the opportunity to learn about new things. The narrator, early in the video, mentions tumbling bitcoins to increase anonymity. Having never heard of this function a quick Google search found bitlaunder[.]com and a Wiki page on Cryptocurrency tumbler. A fifteen minute tangent gave me some basic understanding of the concept. It is also interesting that cyber criminals are often brought down, when viewing in retrospect, by very basic OPSEC mistakes. Analysts tug on those mistakes and in turn unravel and entire case. I believe this video demonstrates well the power of effective analytic techniques and processes.
jpnick99at June 14,2016 Good overview of the Silk Road website. The part I found the most interesting was seeing how law enforcement was able to tie together computer forensics and good old fashioned detective work.
dgroveat July 21,2016 I thought it was great breakdown of the Silk Road, and how it was taken down with computer forensics. The highlighting of how it was bits and pieces of information that was stringed together to make the takedown was great. Often in investigations its a combination of evidence that will point in the right directions and not just a single "smoking gun". This video also highlights how law enforcement is essentially playing wack-a-mole with these type of sites, and unfortunately as long as there is a demand for criminal activity these types of sites will probably never go away.
Modasiyaat July 28,2016 Every crime committed leaves a evidence behind. May it be digital or non-digital. But great work done catching the guy and shutting down the site. Presentation had a very good timeline analysis. Seems like it would have taken more efforts to join two identities and come up with the conclusion that he is one person.
jharg409at September 10,2016 That was better than a crime show of cable!! So, how did friendlyChemist get all the information he got? Isn't Bitcoin becoming more traceable? I really liked this video! This would be an awesome demonstrative fore testifying.
