DEF CON 21 - Unexpected Stories From a Hacker Inside the Government
BrianDaugetteat February 21,2016 Interesting both in terms of the story and the presentation. I think the shut down of the Silk Road will only give rise to other market places on the darkweb, and those marketplaces will keep improving in terms of how they stay secure and protect the identities of their vendors and customers. The FBI will continue to have to use more and more creative ways to shut them down and find out who is behind them.
On a different note, given the amount of money DPR had made from the Silk Road, and how his activities were illegal, I am surprised he was in the US. Surely he could have moved to a country where it would have been harder for law enforcement to get to him.
vdutta1980at March 07,2016 I truly enjoyed this video. The dark net is something I would like to explore at some point in the near future; however not for monetary gains but for better understanding of where to look for when conducting forensics. It appears that if DPR had kept his name anonymous and/or off the clear net websites, he would've still gotten away. While USG has just released in a statement that they paid Carnegie Mellon to isolate exit nodes and to crack the anonymous tunneling algorithm, they would still need at least one piece of specific information about the user. Once this information is provided/retrieved, one can then build a case around the person and committed crimes.
mcoates1at March 08,2016 It's very interesting to see how much in depth the FBI has to go in order to track the source of illigal activiy. It is as if you are tracking them step by step trying to keep up until you can finally get ahead of their next move. Services like the silk road are proof as to how far criminals will go to make illegal money.
haneenat March 10,2016 This process and other alike need a very out of box minds, it's so complicated and are related and connected to each other like a spider net. fastness, accuracy, and working hard to obtain all the information needed.
adamat March 11,2016 3.5 to 4 million dollars? $500k is a pretty big delta. Where did the money go? I loved learning the investigative techniques. It is always fascinating learning about how the FBI and others discover how people are committing crimes. It is a bit harrowing to know that DPR may have had 2 people killed though. I wonder if he just got con-ed?
