It's interesting to see the history of viruses/malware/worms/etc and how much they have changed and how much they have stayed the same. The Sony rootkits was very concerning seeing as I have never heard of it before now and I know I have bought some of those CDs back in the day (perhaps I will go through my collection and see if I can find one). The speaker didn't say this explicitly but I think he was implying that Stuxnet was the first state-sponsored weaponized virus (brought to you by the United States); is this going to become common place? Are there already other state-sponsored weaponized viruses out there that we don't know about? I'd ask if this is how wars will be fought in the future but Russia has already used attacks like these when they invaded Georgia.

The History and Evolution of Malware – in the last 20 years, the types and complexities of computer viruses and other malware have reached new heights. Social media and the internet has expanded the geographical jurisdiction of hackers since malware can target any computer around the world from a single location. Ransomware is the favorite tool for most cybercriminals as it disables the system until the criminal receives a ransom, and restoring the operation of the system is not guaranteed

In the earlier days of Computing and the Internet, most viruses were more irritating, and the damage caused tended to the limited to a handful of hardware devices. Today, we have an array of malware including worms, ransomware, and even adware. A lot of malware today are designed to steal information from unsuspecting consumers such as credit card or banking information. Malware can now also compromise entire power grids or other utility systems, and so large corporations have to invest several tens of millions of dollars every year to secure all their networks.

This video was amazing, the coverage of the first computer virus to the most current at the time of this video was worth every second of watch this video. The attention to detail and coverage of each virus was great and it never got dull, even further this gave a synopsis of why each virus occurred and when this became a for hire sport. With the horizon of new viruses daily knowing the history of viruses how they spread and why people may be motivated to create them will assist in projects such as software providence where viruses are categorized based on their behaviors.

Viruses have definitely changed and evolved but a lot of the techniques have stayed the same. They're just using the same technique on new systems. I wonder what type of viruses would be created 20 years from now and if it'll be the criminals that will be winning this war.
