Echoing some of the earlier commenters, I am somewhat surprised that these hackers are doing this out of a sense of national pride, which definitely doesn't seem to be the sentiment in the US..it's more a singular/personal motive sort of thing. I wonder if the Chinese government is taking advantage of such skilled hackers (seems to be a waste of talent and resourcing if they're investing elsewhere) by recruiting them. Interesting how nationalism plays a role on the individual level and how it manifests itself in larger issues like cyber warfare.

I wonder if there will ever be a Chinese version of Edward Snowden who will become disillusioned and disclose just what the Chinese government has done in the cyber arena. It seems unlikely now, for several reasons, namely the tight control by the state over the military that does most of this type of hacking, and the vicious way that the government treats its internal opponents. But there are still Chinese dissidents who have made their beliefs heard, so perhaps we will see someone step forward.

It was interesting how he said that he was being patriotic, and that hackers from here are regarded as rebels. I also found it amazing how many years experience he has.

Interesting introduction to Chinese hackers, their motivations, origins, backers, etc. I thought it was interesting how the former hacker shared that the Chinese government didn't support them, but it couldn't stop them either. Feeling unstoppable is probably a general draw in the hacking world, but when you live in a country such as China with so much government control, it probably takes on a new meaning in comparison. Intentional or not, the level of sophistication would bring an international focus to China's government as a by-product.

This was an ok video by CNN describing Chinese Hacker profiles. It seems to be a little outdated. It would be interesting to see an American version of some the popular gray/white hat hackers here in the US. Hackers such as the J3st3r target and hack terrorist websites and take them down, in addition to launching DDOS attacks.
