dosmillerat December 01,2014 I think it's smart that the government hires skilled hackers to help them bring down criminal hackers, but I think you still can't fully trust some of these people because they were once one of those people you are currently investigating.
cknightat December 14,2014 This scenario is a new and challenging situation for nations. How do you determine the nature of a cyber attack originating from another nation? E.G., Chinese hackers referenced in the Mandiant article, vs a teenager "making the cyber crime" for their own benefit. Is it possible that a major "cyber war" could start because a loan actor penetrates a US federal system from a country the US considers to be unfriendly?
DPerryat January 25,2015 ^cknight: I think that's definitely a good possibility. Sometimes all it takes is one "Shot heard around the world" - there could easily be a scenario one day where one, cyber-shot will be taken to start a cyber war. Even more because of the vast capability we have with today's technology to pin these crimes on anyone (or nation) of our choosing.
nbodykat January 25,2015 Interesting video. It puts a new perspective on the nature of the hackers from China. I didn't think these hackers were doing this on their own out of a sense of National pride. I really thought the government had a role and knew this was going on, but maybe they don't have control. In a way it's a little hard to believe since China seems to crack down on those who don't do what the government wants or disagrees with the government in a public manner.
jczarnyat January 26,2015 Interesting point, but I've seen enough commentary from other news / reporting outlets to know that although some of these attacks may be homegrown in China for reasons of national pride most of these attacks are generated from the military/government. Just watch a website like http://map.ipviking.com/ for 10 minutes and you will get a sense of the sheer amount of traffic / "attacks" between the US/China. Maybe if our hackers had more national pride we would be winning this war?
